February 2007 Patient: Dolly

Dolly is a six month old Australian Shepherd that was hit by a car last November. She presented with a severely broken leg on her left front. It was in numerous pieces. Dr. Nayfield had just received training in a new bone repairing technology called the interlocking plate and screw fixation.

He decided to try this technique on Dolly. During the surgery several fragments were able to be positioned together using a screw and wires. The interlocking plate was applied to the top surface of the bone and held in place with the interlocking screws.

After surgery Dolly received medications for pain and antibiotic therapy. She began to walk on the leg within days. It is now 12 weeks since the surgery and Dolly has healed almost completely. She is running and playing normally. She is a huge success.
